All good things must come to an end, and unfortunately for us, that also means some of the beloved Toyota brands. While new Toyotas continue to dominate the market place, we have a bit of a soft spot for some of our age old favourites. While we cherished these models, we know that we have to grow and change with the times and new advances in automotive technologies. These 5 additions to the Toyota brand may have already lived out their glory days, but the old-fashioned originals had to make way for better things. Let’s take a look at the 5 Toyota models we wish were still motoring around on the road.
Toyota Solara
With a name that translates roughly to “of the sun” the Toyota Solara was made for enjoying just that, designed as a spiffy convertible model. The Solara graced the roads from 1998 until 2008 and was based off of the original Camry. The Solara was a mid-sized coupe and saw seven generations of production before its sportiness gave way to newer models.
Toyota Cecilia
The Toyota Cecilia saw more than three decades, from 1971 until 2006 before it left the production line. The Celica was offered as a liftback, a coupe, and eventually a convertible. The vehicle eventually spawned the Celica XX/Supra in 1978, attracting a number of performance fans. Like thr Solara, the Cecilia saw seven generations of production.
Toyota Corolla Wagon
Not to be confused with the genuine, one and only Toyota Corolla, the Corolla Wagon was all about trying to accommodate passengers. Before the Corolla gained the fame it enjoys today, this wagon version was available. But, unfortunately it couldn’t compete with the sedan and it was eventually repurposed one last time as the Corolla Matrix in 2002 before removing it from production completely in 2014.
Toyota FJ Cruiser
If you’re familiar with Toyota’s recent Land Cruiser collection, this was the best thing that came before it. The FJ Cruiser was originally designed as a retro SUV that was modelled after the Land Cruiser FJ40 model that first hit the market in 1963 and was meant for adventurous off-road performance. Although the FJ Cruiser can still be found in Australia, it’s no longer available on the North American auto market.
Toyota Supra
A fan favourite, the Toyota Supra was modelled after the Cecilia and was meant for one thing--speed! This car debuted in many famous Hollywood movies and video games alike, such as Gran Turismo and The Fast and the Furious series. Toyota unveiled the FT-1 concept in 2014 and a successor to this popular model is due back on the market in a few years. If you're still looking for that need for speed (and outstanding handling) check out the 2016 Toyota Camry.
With so many beloved old-school models, Toyota continues to be a top contender on today’s auto market. Technologies continue to evolve and with that, production is on the rise. Just this year, Toyota unveiled the 2017 Toyota Tacoma and the 2016 Toyota Tundra--both vehicles that have gained praise all around the world. Redefining off-road platforms, the Tacoma is ready to take the market by storm, offering a heritage inspired Toyota grille, new LED lighting systems and FOX 2.5 Internal Bypass shocks tuned by TRD. The 2016 Tundra, on the other hand, is your next work vehicle, equipped with heavy-duty towing capabilities, three impressive cab options and ten unique and distinct models to choose from.
