With a focus on innovative safety features, working towards a greener future and ensuring that quality vehicles are affordable for all, Toyota is truly a leader in the automotive industry. So how do some of our most popular Toyota cars, like Corolla and Camry, stack up against some of their biggest competitors? Read on to learn which cars will reign supreme!
Dependable, classic and affordable, the Toyota Corolla has been a long-standing popular sedan. To usher in the new decade, Corolla is sporting a complete redesign that has added some personality and modern touches to this best-selling Toyota. Thanks to the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform, Corolla’s frame has been rebuilt to be lower, wider, provide better stability and hug mountain roads like never before. Toyota’s innovative Safety Sense program now comes standard in all Toyota vehicles, including Corolla, and features some of the most technologically advanced driver-assist safety systems in the industry. To round out the long list of brand-new features, Corolla also now offers a powerful hybrid engine, making it gentle on the environment and your wallet.
The Toyota Camry is not just any midsize sedan - it combines performance, luxury and tech that is unmatched by any competitor. Camry’s various trim levels provide a wide range of customization, allowing you to personalize the look and feel of your ride. New in 2020, Toyota announced the limited edition TRD V6, a sporty and powerful set of wheels that was created by the Toyota Racing Development Team to bring a new edge to the Camry suite. Perhaps most impressive of all is Camry’s fuel efficiency. Besides offering Toyota’s intelligent hybrid powertrain, the 4-cylinder Camry SE boasted 6.2L/100km in real-world highway testing, making it the most economical non-hybrid car on the road.
As two of Canada’s best-selling compact sedans, it’s natural to compare the Toyota Corolla to the Honda Civic. Both options offer an affordable, stylish and reliable car-buying and ownership experience, so which one comes out on top? One category where Corolla demolishes Civic is in overall fuel efficiency; while Civic manages 9.6L/100km of combined driving (city and highway), Corolla averages just 6.7-7.4L/100km during combined driving tests, which could save you thousands of dollars in fuel over the course of a few years. For BC drivers who consider the environmental impact of the automotive industry, Toyota’s praise-worthy hybrid powertrain is available in all 2020 Corollas, whereas Civic does not offer a hybrid engine.
The Toyota Corolla also comes with a more advanced suite of safety features, including sophisticated lane-tracing assist and traffic sign recognition systems. Where Civic failed to garner any safety awards for 2020, the Toyota Corolla received the IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award, the highest honour a vehicle can receive from the Institute. Even with all of these impressive features, Corolla still undercuts the Civic in affordability, costing a few thousand dollars less than Civic. Both cars offer sedan and hatchback body styles, similar amounts of cargo space and rear legroom, a fun driving experience and stylish details; but Corolla’s unbeatable fuel efficiency, hybrid engine option, standard suite of advanced safety features and value-laden price tag make it the clear winner in this battle.
Both the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are versatile, dependable and exciting midsize sedans in their own right; but as these dominating cars battle it out, Camry emerges as a clear winner. Although the base model for both cars is comparable in price, top-end affordability clearly goes to the Camry, with its new TRD model offering more luxury and power than the top-end Accord for nearly $5000 less. In the 2020 JD Power’s predicted reliability ratings, Camry again came out on top, earning four out of five points compared to Accord’s three out of five.
Toyota is well-known for being incredibly generous with its standard base-trim features, which is where Camry truly starts to pull away from the competition. Camry has a plethora of standard advanced technology, including a fully-loaded, 7-inch touchscreen display with ample connectivity and a user-friendly interface, all available in any base model, while you need to move up (and pay for) a full trim level with the Accord to even have access to a touchscreen display. Similar to the Corolla, Toyota’s suite of sophisticated active safety features that come standard in all base model cars, trucks and SUVs simply can’t be beat by any competitor.
Performance? The Toyota Camry is the clear winner here, too! In all head-to-head tests, Camry proved to have better acceleration and overall engine performance than the Honda Accord, offering a 2.5L, 4-cylinder engine with 203 horsepower at the base level, compared to Accord’s 1.5L, 192 horsepower engine. Top trim options put Camry at 301 horsepower with its 3.5L, V-6 engine, while Accord maxes out with a 2.0L, 4-cylinder that offers 252 hp. Even with such an impressive engine, Camry destroys the competition when it comes to fuel economy. While you’ll get 7.2-9.1L/100km out of a Honda Accord, Camry boasts as little as 6.2L/100km in mixed-condition testing.
It’s clear to see that when it comes to these best-selling compact and midsize sedans, Toyotas consistently come out on top. When you compare Corolla and Camry to Civic and Accord, there is just no denying that Toyota’s fuel efficient yet powerful engines, generous base-model standard features and unbeatable affordability put these Toyota cars at the top of the pack for BC drivers.
